Success – what is it?

Before trying to establish what success is, take a look at the opposite of success, which is failure.

Failure
The dictionary says that failure is:
‘…the act or instance of failing; a person or thing that is unsuccessful or disappointing; non performance of something required or expected.’

In fact, it’s just an opportunity to have a different perspective. Without making what many consider to be mistakes, we could never have the necessary experience to make us consider the possibility of trying something a different way.

Creating
All great inventors know that each experiment brings about a certain result. Each of the phases of discovery is one step nearer to the proof they are seeking. Thomas Edison tried over and over to find a suitable material for the filament of his electric light bulb. After several hundred ‘failures’, his friends and colleagues begged him to give up. He refused and finally discovered the tungsten filament, which we still use in our light bulbs today. Never once did Edison consider giving up, never once did he think that it was all a waste of time.

Children know
Notice a small child attempting to take their first few steps. They fall down, get up and try again, fall down, get up and try again. On and on they go, until one day they find they can take their first few steps without help, and without falling down. Do they give up along the way? Do they say ‘That’s enough – I’ve tried it once and it doesn’t work?’

Success
The dictionary says that confidence is:
‘…a favourable outcome of something attempted.’

It’s logical then that one of the major ingredients of success is to keep on trying until the favourable, desired outcome is attained.

In order to succeed don’t be afraid to:
Try, try and try again!
