Public Speaking phobia – how to overcome it
The simple truth
The truth is all around us, yet comparatively few people seem to grasp its full significance. If you visualize something in your mind and then constantly think about it, you’ll attract it to you. It’s a universal law. Like a magnet, you draw to yourself whatever you’re constantly thinking about.
If you want a different outcome, think a different thought!
If you concentrate all the time on negative thoughts and don’t like the feelings you have, it’s time for you to make a change. If you don’t like what you’re currently experiencing, then change to a new thought. Write down what it is you really want. Focus on it constantly and visualize the outcome you want, as though you already have it.
Jeff’s story
Jeff was convinced that he couldn’t stand up in public and give a speech. When he was just a kid, his teacher asked him to stand up in front of the class and talk about ‘My summer holiday.’ Unfortunately, the youngster had just experienced a really terrible holiday and when he tried to speak about it, he just couldn’t get a word out. He thought everyone would laugh at him and became totally tongue-tied. Sure enough, all the school children in the class began to laugh and, in great embarrassment, Jeff sat down, his face bright pink and his hands wet with fear. From that day on, Jeff only had to think about speaking in public to find he was overcome with panic.
So, how did Jeff free himself from his great fear of speaking in public?
He got himself a coach and, as a result, one of the invaluable lessons he learned was to consciously remember an immensely enjoyable holiday he’d spent by the sea. He focused on the sounds of the waves of the ocean, the smell of the salty spray and the feeling of water on his bare skin. As he worked at this mind-picturing this wonderful holiday, Jeff developed a feeling of holiday happiness that he could easily recall at will anytime he wanted to. Whenever faced with a particular challenge, Jeff would consciously bring this image to mind. He would then feel re-assured by a surge of sheer joy and begin to exude the confidence, which had previously been lacking.
