How to make an impact
What is Impact?
If you walk into a lamp-post, there’s an impact, one you won’t forget
in a hurry. A firework going off unexpectedly makes you jump – that,
too, is an impact.
However, can you honestly say that the way you walk into a business
or a social networking meeting, has real impact? Let’s take a look at
how you can make a real impact in any life situation.
People are judgmental
Whenever people set eyes on you for the first time, they scan you from
head to toe – all in a split second. They make a judgment about you,
maybe conscious, maybe unconscious. It could be something like ‘Suit’s nice – pity about the hair!’ Then, the moment you open your mouth to speak, they make an even greater judgment about you.
Voice and body language
Is your voice quieter than you imagined it to be? Most people talk too
quietly and, if you’re one of them, you may sound nervous, even if
you’re not. Most people speak too fast and, if you do this, you could
sound as if you’re lacking in confidence. What does your voice tell
people about your character? Do you come over as a strong, intelligent
and likeable kind of person? If not, is that really how you want to be
perceived? And what is your body language telling people about you? Do
you hunch your shoulders or shift from one foot to another? Do you
cross your arms in front of you? All these can be seen as gestures of
defensiveness or insecurity.
